The mandate

GDA co-founded Metaverse Group with one of the earliest Canadian family offices active in the category. The objective was to establish a first mover in virtual real estate and enterprise solutions at a point when no institutional operator existed in the space.

What was built

The firm built the company from formation: brand and market positioning, an executive team including a chairman with a prior unicorn exit and a chief executive with prior public company exits, and an origination pipeline of enterprise tenants including Fortune 500 companies. Metaverse Group executed the largest acquisition of virtual land completed to that date, taking the largest estate in Decentraland’s Fashion Street District and the entirety of its Music Hub District.

The outcome

Two financing rounds, both led by Tokens.com, totalling approximately $12.5 million, followed by acquisition of the company by Tokens.com — a holding company listed in both Toronto and New York. The company was covered in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, and Forbes without paid placement. Founding to exit took two years.

The complete cycle: the firm founded the company, capitalized it, staffed it, and sold it to a public buyer.
