What are Bitcoin Ordinals and inscriptions?

Ordinals is a numbering scheme that gives every satoshi a serial number in the order it was mined, which makes individual satoshis distinguishable and therefore trackable. An inscription is arbitrary data — an image, a file, a name — written onto one of those satoshis and carried with it when it moves. Together they let Bitcoin hold unique digital property without a second layer or a bridge.
The institutional significance is custody and permanence rather than novelty. Because an inscription lives in the Bitcoin transaction itself, the asset inherits Bitcoin's settlement assurances: it does not depend on a smart contract platform remaining live, a bridge remaining solvent, or a company continuing to host a file. For an asset intended to represent title — which is what digital land is — that inheritance is the whole argument, and it is why the firm treats Bitcoin-native property differently from tokenized property elsewhere.
The trade-offs are equally concrete and should be stated. Block space is scarce and priced, so inscribing is a real cost that rises with congestion. Bitcoin's scripting is deliberately limited, so the programmability available on other chains is not available here and has to be built in applications around the asset.
