What is an AI organizational structure?
The answer
An AI organizational structure is the org chart of a company whose workforce is part human and part agent: which roles agents hold, which decisions remain reserved to people, what each agent may commit alone, and how the whole arrangement is recorded. It is a governance artefact before it is a technology choice.
Most companies install agents the way they installed software — by function, one tool at a time, with no statement of who holds what authority. That works to roughly a dozen agents and then stops, because the questions that arrive next are organizational rather than technical: who did this, under whose authority, and who answers for it. A company that cannot draw the chart cannot answer them.
The structure a board should expect names four things. The roles agents hold and the outcomes they own. The decisions reserved to humans, stated as thresholds rather than sentiments. The reporting line — which human is accountable for which agent’s work. And the record, which has to be a native property of the organization rather than a reconstruction. Firms that write this down before scaling get an operating model; firms that scale first get an incident.
